South Downtown owners buy historic Friedman's Shoes building

By Anila Yoganathan – Staff Reporter, Atlanta Business Chronicle Jul 23, 2024

After decades in business on Hotel Row and receiving multiple offers for their historic building, the owners of Friedman's Shoes have sold their property and are moving down the street in South Downtown.

The buyers are Jon Birdsong and David Cummings, the local tech venture capitalists behind Atlanta Tech Village. Birdsong and Cummings acquired a portfolio of properties in South Downtown last year after German developer Newport struggled to redevelop the area and sold off its holdings.

The new South Downtown group intends to bring people back to the area with new retail, housing and office space and has an aggressive plan to get a segment of properties ready by the time the FIFA World Cup comes to Atlanta in 2026.
